Match of the Week
After suffering a 6-0 beating last week Fred was back in business this week and a 3-2 winner over San Dimas. This wasn’t as close as it looked with the Gardeners 3-0 up before my team replied. All the goals came in the last half hour. Emre Can opened the scoring with an exquisite curling shot on 64 minutes, Jermain Defoe drilled in on 77 and Eden Hazard outsprinted my defence as the clock ran down. Matt Phillips hit a consolation from range for me and Kyle Walker added a clean in a too little, too late sort of way.
Elsewhere in the League
The second and third placed teams also won by a single goal margin. The Muppets needed a clean from Calum Chambers to see off YTFIB 2-1. Sadio Mane had scored first for Ryan while Julian must have thought Zlatan’s lob just before the break had earned him a point. There was only one goal in the Wheel Madrid/Nil Satis match and that was from Callum Wilson’s second-half spot-kick to give Paul W the points.
It was easier for the fourth-placed Phoenix against Mega Bucks. James Tomkins bundled the opening goal for Brian on 35 minutes but things got going after the break. Diego Costa is in outstanding form right now and he bullied Dave’s defence into submission to add a second on the hour. A rare goal from ‘the Ox’ and a couple of cleans meant Brian was comfortably home. Beef has been struggling for goalscorers for the last couple of seasons and took a chance on Jon Walters being able to add something to his team. It took 20 minutes of the game against Cheese Makers for the Irishman to make his mark with a delicate, hooked finish. Marc Muniesa added a classy second before Gary Cahill and Robert Huth traded own goals and Trusted ended up 4-1 winners.
FCK2 played one of their best games this season but still ended on the losing side after running into an Alexis Sanchez-inspired CFJs performance. The Chilean’s second-half hat-trick took the game away from Kevin’s side who’d led through a Harry Kane brace and welcomed back Andy Carroll with a trademark header. The Wateringhole Society stretch their unbeaten run in the league to five but shared the points with the Aardvarks. Ady was 2-0 up through Son’s scissor-kick and a header from Gaston Ramirez but Nathan Ake took advantage of a goalkeeping error in injury time and Erik Pieters clean was the equaliser.
Claymore’s losing run now stretches to seven league games after defeat to the Artisans. Jonny Evans had put Clive ahead but two from Christian Benteke, two from Christian Eriksen and a late penalty from Leighton Baines were more than enough to see off the struggling champions. As if that wasn’t bad enough Sergio Aguero and Fernandinho will be serving bans for late sendings off.
