Paul Cartmell Memorial Trophy

Fred closed in on a PCMT repeat in with victory at the Artisans. Mo Salah (what a signing he’s been) scored in both halves before Leighton Baines converted from the spot in injury time to give Ben hope of taking something from the game. That hope didn’t last long as Thibaut Courtois and Cesar Azpilicueta got the cleans to make it 4-1 to the holders. Our league leaders are still unbeaten after a tough battle with the improving YTFIB. Kevin de Bruyne rifled Ryan ahead on 19 minutes (with his weaker foot!) but Vicente Iborra opened his WSFFL account to bring the game level just after the half hour. A tense second period ended with James Tarkowski getting the winning clean for the Muppets.

Trusted’s last win in this competition came in 2006/7 and they have change to add to that after edging out San Dimas 1-0. Gabriel Jesus got the only goal for Beef from close range 16 minutes from the end after an offside build-up. (I’m not bitter.) Ady won the ‘Battle of the Bevans’ surprisingly comfortably. Rajiv van la Parra struck a world up into the ‘postage stamp’ just before half-time. It was 1-1 with 11 minutes after the re-start as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain got hid first for Dave. A flurry of goals in the next 12 minutes from Son, Lacazette and Niasse after some comedy ‘keeping sorted this out in the Aardvarks favour.

Charity Shield

Holders Nil Satis have been having a rough time in the league but the Wateringhole Society have been matching them in that department. Sheridan Shaqiri was given too much space by the Society defence to open the scoring six minutes before the break and masked man Dominic Calvert-Lewin added to the lead on 74 minutes. Marcos Alonso completed the win for Paul with a clean. Twice winners Athletico are out though after running into an improved Cheese Makers performance. Matthew was 3-0 up before Brian could reply. Glenn Murray thighed in on the half hour, Richardson evaded the Phoenix keeper to poke home straight after the break and Manuel Lanzini got free at the back post to chest and volley into the far corner. Riyadh Mahrez gave Brian a modicum of hope on the hour but Steve Cook powered home a header in injury time to make it 4-1 to the Cheesers.

Last week Claymore and the CFJs played out a dreary 1-0 in Clive’s favour. This week it was a slightly less dreary 1-1 draw. Sergio Aguero converted a penalty on 50 minutes to give Claymore the lead but it only last five minutes before an unmarked Alvaro Morata scored with a header to earn Chris a replay. Wheel Madrid have made the last four of a Cup for the first time after a 1-0 win over Markian. Joel Matip stabbed in a rebound on 24 minutes for the only goal of the game but Markian could have forced a reply if Tom Cleverly hadn’t put his penalty wide ten minutes into injury time.

In the replay - Four first half goals saw the CFJs safely into the semi-finals and become stand-out favourites to win their second Charity Shield. The result means Claymore will need to wait at least another year to complete the set of WSFFL trophies.
