2012/13 Transfer Stats

Before I completely bring down the curtain on last season let's have a look at some numbers.

You may remember I took a look at transfer dealings last year so here's something similar.

Income

A bit of business between teams meant transfer expenditure across the league was £331m. This was a £40m increase on the year before but is about average across the last seven seasons.

Two teams turned profits on their business but one was on the modest side.

Expenditure

I didn't think there was a dramatic amount of business but at £531,750,000 this was the second highest over the last seven seasons.

Eight teams kept losses below £15m while two exceeded £25m.

Total Business

Total losses across the league topped £200m for the second successive season at £200,750,000 but this is still £50m down on the 2006/07 record.

Here are some updated team stats (names and seasons withheld)

(All awards are made on basis of contributions in all WSFFL competitions. Where there is a tie, contributions in league matches take precedence. Then I'll try and separate them by goals scored. Then perhaps by whoever's tallest. If you see two or more names as subs in a position I still couldn't split them.)

Co-Ord Round-up Part Five - If we did things differently...

I'll repeat what I say every year,  I'm not suggesting we do! The way we compare scores against one other is what makes this the king of Fantasy Football games. But what if we did? The table below shows the finishing positions by number of 'contributions' (goals, cleans, saved penalties and own goals)*.

1. The Cow-Faced Juniors - 115 (same place as real table, 13 more contributions than last season)
2. Claymore Athletic FC - 108 (same place, six fewer contributions than last season)
3. Athletico Phoenix - 107 (same place, 16 more)
4. Trusted By Millions - 97 (three places higher, eight fewer)
5. You Know Your Boston Rock FC - 93 (five places higher, four more)
6. Aardvark Abacus - 92 (two places lower, four more)
7. San Dimas High School - 90 (two places higher, ten more)
8. Real Muppets - 84 (two places lower, six more)
9. The Fabulous Artisans - 76 (one place lower, 11 fewer)
10. Final Fantasy XI - 74 (five places lower, six more)
=11. Mega Buck Bandits - 66 (one place higher, one more)
=11. The Cheese Makers - 66 (three places higher, five fewer)
13. The Dead Parrots - 65 (two places lower, ten fewer)
14. Nil Satis Nisi Optimum - 55 (two places higher, nine fewer)
15. Fred West Landscape Gardening XI - 54 (same place 31 fewer)
16. YTFIB - 52 (three lower, one fewer)

What can we learn from the above? The CFJs were worthy champions and we can't argue with the top three. Boston Rock and San Dimas were unlucky to finish in the bottom half while Final Fantasy and YTIB punched above their weight.  Fred, the Artisans and the Parrots all had a double-figure drop in contributions than the previous season, Fred massively so.

*That's if they're correct of course. I'm not checking!

Co-Ord Round-up Part four - 1st - 4th

1st The Cow-Faced Juniors (up four places on last season)
Chris's season was almost perfect but also very nearly an anti-climax. After several near misses he claimed his first trophy in December with a PCMT victory. The CFJs boasted three of the top four scorers in the league in Luis Suarez, Gareth Bale and Michu and they led the battle against Claymore in the league and cup. The FA Cup ended in final defeat but it looked the league had gone too but Clive's team let a final day lead in the league slip and the CFJs took advantage to claim the crown. An interesting summer lies ahead for Chris with bids possible for Suarez and Bale.
Star Player: Luis Suarez (22 goals)
Big Money Flop: None that I can spot. Hard to pick on Jack Butland who was loaned out so maybe we need a medium money flop - Danny Graham (three goals)

2nd Claymore Athletic FC (down one)
Clive came within one game of back-to-back league and cup doubles but stumbled on the last day. Where the CFJs had three big goalscorers to count one Claymore needed to spread their contributions around. Sergio Aguero wasn't the force of last season, Olivier Giroud didn't really click and Wayne Rooney's form was in and out and a late season fall-out with the boss didn't help. Defensively this team is still solid with David Luiz, Gael Clichy and Branislav Ivanovic a solid base for another trophy tilt next season.
Star Player: Gael Clichy (14 cleans)
Big Money Flop: Another medium money flop here - Michael Owen (nothing)

3rd Athletico Phoenix (up one)
Brian couldn't retain the Charity Shield or add another pot to the Kingham Park trophy cabinet but without a poor run from October to December (two points out of 18) the Phoenix may have had a league title to celebrate. Robin van Persie may have added a second Player of the Season award to his list of accolades but this is no one man team. Per Mertersacker added plenty of clean sheets, Jan Vertonghen and Santi Cazorla were more than useful additions and Brian knows where he needs to strengthen to take his team on.
Star Player: Robin van Persie (26 goals)
Big Money Flop: Maybe a bit harsh but Bobby Zamora (four goals)

4th Aardvark Abacus (up two)
As in 2011/12 Ady's team were doing their best work at the end of the campaign having left themselves too much to do. With Emmanuel Adebayor having one of his more languid seasons and Lukas Podolski taking time to settle goals were hard to come by and the Aardvarks were still down in tenth come week 12. Ady's defence led the recovery. Vincent Kompany and Nacho Monreal made valuable contributions and Matija Nastasic is very much one for the future. Podolski's form improved late on so reasons for optimism at the Aldi Arena.
Star Player: Vincent Kompany (one goal, ten cleans)
Big Money Flops: Take your pick from Sebastian Coates and the now departed Marouane Chamakh (both nothing - combined cost £39m!)

Saturday 1 June 2013

Co-Ord Round-up Part three - 5th-8th

5th Final Fantasy XI (up ten places on last season)
The best finishing position and most points ever made it a fabulous season for Ceri. But could it have been even better? Demba Ba's early season form drove Final Fantasy to the top of the table in the early weeks but he went cold in the New Year and a top three bid stalled. It wasn't all about Ba though. Mark Schwarzer was the league's top penalty saver and Gareth McAuley and Jose Enrique are reliable defenders. And for a manager who likes a Spaniard what if Ceri had signed Michu?
Star Player: Demba Ba (18 goals)
Big Money Flops: Take your pick from Connor Wickham and Andrei Arshavin (both nothing)

6th Real Muppets (up seven)
Much more like it from Ryan's team this year. Carlos Tevez was welcomed back into the fold and rewarded his manager with a double-figure goals haul. Pepe Reina showed a bit more of his best form this season while Daniels Agger (at the back) and Sturridge (up front) also chipped in. If Ryan is going to get back into trophy contention he might need to take a look at the midfield which didn't contribute hugely and which of his players are fit and playing.
Star Player: Pepe Reina (12 cleans, one saved penalty)
Big Money Flop: Fabio Borini (nothing, but watch out next season!)

7th Trusted By Millions (down five)
Considering Beef was only denied last year's title in injury time on the last day it's a surprise that he was never in the shake-up this time round. It's hard to put your finger on why. The main forwards (Dzeko, Cisse and Hernandez) blew hot and cold and Beef generally picked them when they were on the cold side. In midfield Stephane Sessegenon took a while to warm up and Steven Gerrard was sidelined through injury. Trusted also need to replace the retiring Jamie Carragher.
Star Player: David De Gea (11 cleans)
Big Money Flop: Marko Marin (nothing)

8th The Fabulous Artisans (down five)
Another team that were in the title race until the last day last season but after the first few weeks were never close this time. It would be easy to pin Ben's troubles on Mario Balotelli so let's do that. The Italian is so talented and expensive it was hard to leave him out but he didn't deliver. Gervinho and Hugo Rodallega were also disappointments. The big plus was Christian Benteke who took his chance after Balotelli left and looks the man for Ben to build his team round next season.
Star Players: Christian Benteke (12 goals) and Asmir Begovic (12 cleans)
Big Money Flop: Go on then... the now departed Mario Balotelli (one goal)
