Report

Three of the league's top four scorers in Riyad Mahrez, Jamie Vardy and Romelu Lukaku lined up in this hotly anticipated game between two of the title chasers. One striker wasn't on show though, Brian missing Diego Costa through suspension.

With all that striking talent on show it was a surprise that a defender was the first name on the scoresheet. And at the wrong end too. Carl Jenkinson deflected a cross past his own keeper after 13 minutes to give San Dimas a flying start. Brian's team tried to get back on terms immediately with Jordan Ayew striking forcing a save two minutes later and Anthony Martial cutting in and hitting a post straight after. San Dimas survived that pressure and doubled their lead on 22 minutes. Lukaku found space and time to turn and steer home from eight yards. Athletico had a chance to cut the deficit ten minutes before the break but Per Mertersacker couldn't direct an instinctive header between the posts.

The first significant action after the break involved Lukaku again on 64 minutes. The Belgian raced on to a long ball, chested down and stroked a shot across the keeper to take the lead to 3-0. Athletico kept battling, Oxlade-Chamberlain hitting a post with seven minutes left and Ayew forced another save in injury time but the Saints' goal stayed intact and a Neil Taylor clean rounded out the win that means the Trophy will stay another year at Tesco Car Park Stadium.

Charity Shield Final result

The CFJs edge out the Artisans to win the Charity Shield for the first time.

The Cow-Faced Juniors 1
Borini 59

The Fabulous Artisans 0

(three cancelled cleans)

At the Etihad Stadium - Att: 54,523

Teams:

CFJs - Speroni; B.Davies, Sagna, Coloccini, van Dijk; Lennon, Willian, Sigurdsson, Ozil; Zarate, Sanchez.   Subs: Butland; Cameron; Gomez; Borini

Artisans - Fabianski; Gibbs, Fernandez, J.Olsson, Baines; Abdi, A.Johnson, Eriksen, Firmino; Origi, J.Campbell.  Subs: Begovic; B.Jones; Brunt; Memphis

Fabio Borini hasn't always looked like a WSFFL striker but his goal just before the hour settled the game and went some way to repaying Chris's £2.5m summer outlay on the Italian.

Borini opened his CFJs account last week and now seems to have developed a taste for goals. These two have doubled his tally for the previous two seasons combined! The Artisans defence were culpable as they were guilty of ball-watching a wayward shot that was heading well wide. Substitute Borini latched onto the opportunity and though his first attempt was denied by the keeper he fired in at the second attempt.

The run up to the game didn't help the Artisans preparation. I think their secretary will probably be hauled into the bosses office next week to explain why the team bus was heading to the Stade de Fromage for a league match a week early. Perhaps that explains Christian Benteke's absence if the big striker had made his own way and couldn't get from Cornwall to manchester in time. Ben's replacement strikeforce of Origi and Campbell made little impression and substitute Memphis was also hauled off by the break. When Christian Eriksen was subbed 18 minutes from time the last vestige of creativity was gone from the Artisans and the CFJs closed out the game in relative comfort.

Claymore take a three-point lead through the Christmas break and into the New Year. Branislav Ivanovic got his first of the season, Olivier Giroud his tenth but Clive’s team only saw off another two-goal salvo from Odion Ighalo for the Aardvarks with cleans from Miguel (or is it Manuel) Britos and Aaron Cresswell.

Athletico and San Dimas warmed up for the PCMT final next week by scoring five apiece. Brian’s team demolished YTFIB and dropped Julian’s side back to the bottom. Riyad Mahrez got two from the spot (how has he not won Player of the Month yet?) My team had more of a struggle and edged out Final Fantasy after leading 2-0 then trailing 4-2 with eight minutes left (what a finish from Yaya Toure that was.) Charlie Daniels pulled one back through an incorrectly rewarded penalty and then Kyle Walker and Neil Taylor cleans turned the game in my favour.

Fred is not out of it and shrugged off the Mega Bucks challenge through an unmarked Dele Alli just before the break and a Hugo Lloris clean although they did have Salomon Rondon sent off in injury time. FCK2 are also on the coat-tails of the leading pack. Harry Kane marauded through Matthew's defence to score the only goal for Kevin and Jon to down the maturing Cheese.

The Charity Shield finalists head into Friday’s game in differing form. The CFJs are unbeaten in six league games and beat the improving Trusted with rare goals from Fabricio Coloccini and Fabio Borini. The Artisans have won only one of their last five in the league and needed a clean from Federico Fernandez to grab a point against Kiran’s Wateringhole Society who led through Shinji Okazaki.

Nil Satis picked up their first win since week five when seeing off the Muppets. Second-half penalties from Oscar and Bojan doing the damage for Paul and Dan.

Claymore's lead is back up to three points after a return to high-scoring ways against Final Fantasy. Olivier Giroud is making up for the lack of Sergio Aguero and Wayne Rooney and set the ball rolling from the spot. The result helped drop Ceri to the foot of the table wit the Fantasy winless since August.

The Phoenix and San Dimas were both held to draws. Brian's team trailled to Jordan Henderson's opener for Beef but Riyad Mahrez turned the Trusted defence inside out to grab a point. SDHS blew a two-goal lead to share a point with the CFJs. No surprise that Jamie Vardy and Romelu Lukaku were on target but Geoff Cameron and Russell Martin cleans shared the spoils.

Two goals in five minutes, from Wilfried Bony and Craig Dawson, saw Fred beat the Artisans to leap back to fourth. FCK2 drop a place and needed two cleans to get a point at Nil Satis. Aaron Ramsey's breakaway and Eric Dier's glancing header within a minute had Paul and Dan in control but cleans from Kevin and Jon's team keep Nil Satis waiting for a win.

The Aardvarks are also on 22 points after beating Mega Bucks. Odion Ighalo started things off early for Ady but Josh King's first WSFFL goal levelled things in the second half. Petr Cech and Nacho Monreal cleans got Ady over the line. Another game where goals were pegged back by clean sheets was the nephew v uncle clash. Junior Stanislas curled in a corner inside two minutes for Cheese Makers and Marouane Fellaini bundled in to double the lead. Kiran got back on terms with cleans form Eric Pieters and Nathan Ake.

The battle at the bottom went to the Muppets. Ryan's win was his first after five straight defeats and came from a late deflection off of Kelechi Iheanacho and a Hector Bellerin clean.

Claymore continue to lead but the margin is now a single point. In an entertaining game against the CFJs Olivier Giroud scored at both ends, Gio Wijnaldum looked to have won it for Clive with an injury time breakaway before Fabricio Coloccini grabbed a draw for Chris and Co with a clean. Brian is back up to second after beating San Dimas. Jamie Vardy drew a blank for me and Romelu Lukaku's goal was only a consolation after Riyad Mahrez struck a hat-trick for Athletico.

FCK2 stay fourth but lost to the odd clean sheet to The Wateringhole Society. Fred also fell to another defeat, this time to Cheese Makers. Delle Alli opened the scoring for the Gardeners but Troy Deeney is running into form for Matthew and levelled from the spot. The Cheesers bagged all three points thanks to Robert Huth's clean and now heads the Warr clan mini-table. Which I don't suppose is important to them.

Ben's team went  down to the Abacus. It was looking good for the Artisans when Joel Campbell fired home the opener in the first half but it turned after the break. Martin Skrtel steered into his own goal to square things up and then Odion Ighalo got away form the Artisans defence in injury time to get the winner for Ady. Trusted are on the up after a shocking start. There's not a lot of goals in Beef's team but cleans from David De Gea and Ryan Shawcross were too much for Ryan's Muppets who are now bottom.

That's also partly due to YTFIB's win over Nil Satis. Marco Arnautovic scored twice in the first 15 minutes and Julian's team held on. And the Okus Derby? Honours even in an entertaining goalless draw.

A third of the way into the season and we have still have two unbeaten teams.

Claymore are back on top after an ultimately routine win over the Muppets. Clive did have to wait until the 69th minute to break through, with Dusan Tadic from the spot, but Scott Dann soon followed up his own header to double the lead and Maya Yoshida and Alex Kolarov doubled that score with cleans. Ryan's 7-2 win over Matthew in week seven looking like a false dawn. Athletico lose top spot but it could have been worse, Brian rescuing a point thanks to a Maarten Stekelenburg clean sheet. Dave was eyeing up a third straight win thanks to another excellent Philippe Coutinho strike but couldn't hold on.

The top two swapping places has led to San Dimas closing back in. My team swept aside Nil Satis 4-0. Yannick Bolasie fired in on 21 minutes, Romelu Lukaku outpaced the defence just before the break and Jamie Vardy added another one from the spot in the second half. Paul and Dan's side hav got just four counters in five weeks. It was a second straight defeat for Fred, this time at FCK2. Harry Kane appears to be back in his groove and got the first goal just after the half hour for the FCK2ers. Micah Richards and Glen Johnson added cleans for the winners who are only six points off the top.

After complimenting the Artisans for their rise up the table they've now lost the last two matches 4-2. Second half goals from Jesse Lingard (an excellent measured shot from outside the box) and Kieran Gibbs had Ben in control but Chris and sons had four clean sheets to turn the tables. They're up to sixth and are showing a bit of form. The Aardvarks sit between those two teams in the table after an entertaining goalless draw with the Wateringhole Society.

Cheese Makers are top of the bottom half after their best performance this season in probably the game of the week against Final Fantasy. Ceri led twice, first through Ayoze Perez and later through Jonny Howson's close range header but Matthew replied both times, first through Manuel Lanzini (see Jesse Lingard) and then Troy Deeney from the spot. The Cheesers got their winner in injury time. Juan Mata keeping his nerve to convert another penalty. Trusted pulled away from the bottom with a win over YTFIB. Julian led through Marco Arnautovic's acrobatic half-volley but Beef cam through courtesy of Ryan Shawcross and Nicolas Otamendi.

The Phoenix fly back to the top after being the only team of the leading three to win. Riyad Mahrez fired in a brace for Brian to give him the lead against the Artisans and despite goals from Christian Benteke and a WSFFL first from Joel Campbell Ben's team couldn't get back on terms. Jordan Ayew on target again for Brian and Per Mertersacker with the clean to make sure. Claymore only managed a draw against Nil Satis this time. Olivier Giroud put Clive ahead early in the second half so a repeat of the 9-0 never looked on. It was completely out of the window on 76 minutes when Aroune Kone got his second to put the Salehs in front and with Alex Kolarov missing an injury time penalty Clive's unbeaten run was slipping away. It was to be saved by a Craig Cathcart clean.

Fred did incur his first defeat, a 6-2 hammering at old rivals the Aardvarks. Odion Ighalo bagged another two for Ady who also had Monreal, Bertrand and Blind cleans to get him up to fifth. That's one place behind San Dimas who beat YTFIB 3-0. We had to wait for an hour for a breakthrough but when Romelu Lukaku opened the scoring Jamie Vardy's weekly goal wasn't far behind. The result drops Julian to the foot of the table.

FCK2 are level on point with the Aardvarks after a late show to beat Trusted. Beef's team were two up through Ramires and Nicolas Otamendi as the clock ran down but Harry Kane got an injury time goal and then Smalling and Johnson got the cleans to give Kevin and Jon the win. The CFJs round out the top half after being Cheese Makers. An early Gerard Deulofeu strike, after being given the freedom of the park on 19 minutes, was Matthew's high point. Graziano Pelle brought the Howells level on 36 and then three cleans got the job done.

Mega Bucks are off the bottom after beating the Muppets 3-1. It's feast or famine for Ryan at the minute and he went hungry this week. Two goals from Phillipe Coutinho, either side of one from Steven Fletcher, did it for Dave. Final Fantasy and the Wateringhole Society drew 2-2 in a game where it all happened late on. Cameron Jerome and a Yaya Toure penalty in the last ten minutes gave Ceri the advantage but cleans from Nathan Ake and Eric Pieters sent Kiran home with a point.

Three unbeaten teams all on 20 points but there has been a change at the top.

Claymore have regained top spot courtesy of their goal difference. It was another four-goal victory for Clive this week, over YTFIB this time, with first-half goals from Olivier Giroud and a deflected strike from Ross Barkley setting it up. Fred trailed Final Fantasy ion the first minute after Matt Ritchie's strike for Ceri but Salomon Rondon levelled on half time and Craig Dawson got the winning clean.

Those results, and Athletico's draw with Cheese Makers, drop Brian's team to third. Troy Deeney (who sounds like he should be a magician - 'The Great Troidini' - I digress) got his first goal for Matthew's club but that was equalised by Jordan Ayew's first goal for the Phoenix. San Dimas are the team that lost their unbeaten record. Trusted took the lead through Erik Lamela and although Jamie Vardy got his customary goal for me Phil Jones' clean won it for Beef to give him only his second win.

The Artisans have gone on a bit of a run and are up to fifth. Billy Jones and Christian Benteke put Ben two up against the Muppets and although Sadio Mane pulled one back for Ryan he then got sent off and Jones finished it with a clean. FCK2 have leapt over the Aardvarks into sixth after beating those opponents 4-0. Harry Kane clearly inspired by last week's dig at him in the report and responded with a match-winning hat-trick.

If it's tight at the top then what about the bottom half? Three points cover all eight teams. Kiran's Wateringhole Society need a nickname so I don't have to type so much every time (The Waterboys? Please explain that one to him Ben) and they secured the points late against the CFJs. Chris and Co had led through Gylfi Sigurdsson but Andre Ayew levelled with three minutes to go and Joe Hart and Nathan Ake sent Kiran into the top ten. Mega Bucks got their first win since week one but are still bottom. It was a late show at Okus too with Steven Fletcher's shinny volley breaking the deadlock against Nil Satis with four minutes left and Wes Morgan's clean finished the game in Dave's favour.

Athletico remain our leaders, coming from a goal down to the Wateringhole Society to win 4-1. Brian will no doubt be pleased that Diego Costa is back among the goals. With Sergio Aguero ruled out for a month there was to be no repeat of a 9-0 win for Clive. It was 7-1 instead. Trusted were the victims this week and four goals from Gio Wijnaldum meant that Aguero wasn't missed.

Fred was bumped down a place on goal difference despite a 5-2 win at the CFJs. Wilfried Bony scored early and late, either side of van Dijk and Sanchez for the CFJs, but Fred had an excellent defensive performance from his team to get three cleans and the points. San Dimas saw off FCK2 3-0 thanks to two from this year's Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy. Last year's Harry Kane, Harry Kane, yet to show the same sort of form for Kevin and Jon.

As well as the CFJs two other teams are in double figures points-wise and chasing down the top four. The Aardvarks had two early goals, from Herrera and Murray, and two cleans to beat Final Fantasy. Ayoze Perez now has a lot on his young shoulders for Ceri's team with Callum Wilson ruled out. The Artisans don't seem to have many goals in them but they were defensively solid against Nil Satis to get the cleans to take the win after Aaron Ramsey's late goal for the Salehs.

The Muppets are hauling themselves away from the foot of the table after their rotten start and fired seven past Cheese Makers this week. A Raheem Sterling hat-trick in the first 45 minutes gave Ryan a lead he didn't relinquish. The battle at the bottom went the way of YTFIB. Boaz Myhill's clean was the only score and keeps Dave rooted to the bottom.
