Report

Both managers had been concerned about injuries in the run-up to the final. For San Dimas Pedro was ruled out but David Silva and Romelu Lukaku returned. For Wheel Madrid, Paul was relying on a ‘walking wounded’ defensive line.

The Wheels defence was almost breached as early as the second minute but Ashley Barnes placed wide from eight yards. Parity didn’t last long though, and David Silva had San Dimas on 10 minutes - the Spaniard getting on the end of a cross from the right and finishing from 10 yards.

The game then settled down for a while but a shocker of a challenge from Ashley Young nine minutes before the break drew a yellow card when some thought it warranted a red. It seemed to fire the Wheels team into life and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg crashed in after a defensive mistake just a minute later to send the game in level at the break. San Dimas were back in front six minutes after half-time in the unlikely shape of 'nicest man in football' N’Golo Kante. The Frenchman’s run into the box was picked out beautifully and Kante chested and then half-volleyed home.

Eric Bailly was the next man who was lucky to stay on the pitch when a reckless high foot could have conceded a penalty after 69b minutes. Paul W was still in the fourth official’s ear when, three minutes later, Romelu Lukaku hooked in to stretch the lead to 3-1. The deficit was back to one almost straight away when Neil Etheridge saved his third penalty of the season to get Wheels back in it with a quarter of an hour left.

San Dimas were then reduced to ten men. No escape for Bailly this time after a two-footed challenge. A Wheels fightback was derailed five minutes from time though. Hojbjerg also sent for an early bath after a late challenge of his own. The Saints were able to see out the last few minutes and Antonio Rudiger got a clean to finishing the scoring and give me my third PCMT win in five seasons.

Match report:

The Aardvarks went into the game as firm favourites after a five-game winning run but YTFIB weren’t without hope coming off the back of a good win over Claymore.

After a slow start David Brooks had a chance to open the scoring for YTFIB after a quarter of an hour but looped his effort into the keeper’s arms. In-form Aardvark striker Son Heung-Min was more ruthless though and put Ady in front on 23 minutes, firing into the corner from 18 yards. Five minutes later the Aardvarks doubled their lead, Nemanja Matic poked in from close range after the YTFIB keeper barely denied a header from a corner.

The next goal was always likely to be crucial (they say 2-0 is a dangerous lead) and it was the Aardvarks who gave themselves breathing space, Son with his second - finishing off after a classic goalmouth scramble. Ricardo Pereira’s screamer with nine minutes left made it slightly uncomfortable for the Aardvarks but when YTFIB were reduced to ten men after Fabian Delph’s dismissal for a wild follow-through tackle the game was pretty much up. Danny Rose got the final counter of the game with a clean sheet.

Congrats to Ady on his first Charity Shield and completing the WSFFL 'Grand Slam', commiserations to Julian.

Halfway through the season and Fred’s lead is six points. Defeat to Ady trimmed the gap from nine, two goals from Son Heung-Min making the difference in the Aardvarks' favour. The Wateringhole Society are on the same points as the Aardvarks after beating the CFJs 3-1. Alex Iwobi’s injury time goal and a Nathan Ake clean got Kiran all three points.

Athletico are in rare form at the moment and made it five wins in a row with a 4-1 win over the Muppets. Among the scorers for Brian were Nathan Redmond with his first of the season and Virgil van Dijk who’s making a bid for Player of the Season honours. Nil Satis are fifth despite a 4-2 defeat to Mega Bucks. P-E Aubameyang with another two goals for Dave as he chases the Golden Boot.

Markian leapfrogged San Dimas with a 4-2 win over those opponents. Another brace from Harry Kane doing the main damage. My team are in rotten form going into the PCMT Final with no league win since Week 8. Wheel Madrid, the other finalists, aren’t much better though. They’ve lost eight of their last ten in the league and went down to Cheese Makers this week. Troy Deeney’s spot-kick and Steve Cook’s clean got Matthew back to winning ways.

Remember that stat from early in the season that said the Artisans were slow starters? Well they’re in full flow now. Ben’s team ran riot at Trusted this week winning 6-1 after being a goal down at the break with Jesse Lingard adding two to his season total. YTFIB are still bottom but are only six points off the top half. David Brooks scored twice and Ilkay Gundogan added a header for Julian before Clive narrowed the deficit with a couple of cleans.

Fred kept his nine-point lead with a 3-1 win at Mega Bucks. Eden Hazard raced away from the Bandits defence to make it 1-0 after 33 minutes but Dave was level soon after the break through Jose Holebas’ long range strike. Saloman Rondon finished off a great team move to make it 2-1 to Fred pretty much straightaway and the leaders finished it off with a Ryan Bennett clean. Ady is still second after a hard-fought 1-0 win over the CFJs, the Aardvarks taking the points thanks to a clean from Jamaal Lascelles.

The Wateringhole are on the same 25 point mark as the Aardvarks, also after a 1-0 win. Kiran got the better of Julian’s team when Raul Jimenez punished some dreadful YTFIB defending after 12 minutes. Nil Satis and Cheese Makers had both slipped after some great early season form but it was Paul S’ team that recovered with a big win. Henrik Mkhitaryan planted a header in the Cheese net after 28 minutes and got a second on 53. Dominic Calvert-Lewin had Nil Satis three up with 25 minutes left and Matt Doherty’s clean completed the rout. Matthew’s team have scored in just one of their last seven league games.

The Muppets inflicted a first home defeat on San Dimas. All looked good for me after 17 minutes when Pedro arrived unnoticed at the far post to put me in front but it was all Ryan’s team after that. Some great skill by Sadio Mane levelled the match and Luka Milivojevic proved he’s not all about penalties when he smacked in from 25 yards six minutes before the break. Player of the Month Raheem Sterling got the third and leaves my team six league games without a win. Athletico Phoenix have won four in a row and this week Wheel Madrid were the victims. Jamie Vardy had a late chance to put Paul W ahead but was denied by a great save and Arthur Masuaku got the winning clean for Brian.

Markian's recent progress was halted by the Artisans. The two teams went in to half-time at 2-2, two Danny Ings headers for Markian equalising efforts from Gerard Deulofeu and Jesse Lingard, Christian Eriksen put Ben’s side ahead for a third time in injury time at the end of the game and cleans from Lukas Fabianski and Patrick van Aanholt put a shine on the scoreline. Ben’s team are now off the bottom after winning three of their last four. Trusted inflicted a heavy defeat on Claymore despite Clive’s team taking the lead through a great Robert Snodgrass effort. Beef turned it round with two goals from Gabriel Jesus (his first of the season) and two late deflected shots from Xherdan Shaqiri.
