* We only have records going back to 2000/01 of course. I have this feeling there was another ten and possibly even an 11 but I can't prove it.

** These games happened in the same PL game week. I don't think any of the others did.

2021/22 Co-Ord Round-up Part Eight - 1st-4th

1st: The Wateringhole Society (up five places on last season)
Kiran led the league for 21 weeks but only took the title in the last seconds of the season after a poor run of six without a win in April and May. The defence was Kiran's strong point as Marcus Rashford and Raul Jimenez failed to fire. Maxwell Cornet was excellent when fit and the Dejan Kulusevski signing was inspired. Might need a striker and a keeper to back this up but don't bet against it.

What happened to last year's Star Player? He won it this year too.

Star Player: Ruben Dias (13 clean sheets)

2nd: The Fabulous Artisans (same place)
A third runner-up spot in six years for Ben. Was always chasing after a run of one point from 18 in November and December and was denied on goal difference at the end. Has a solid squad without too many real stars but Jarod Bowen could be about to step up a level and the manager will hoping Eddie Nketiah stays on to lead another title push next season.

What happened to last year's Star Player? Kyle Walker wasn't used as much and just missed out to...

Star Player: Mason Mount (nine goals)

3rd: Claymore Athletic FC (up twelve)
Almost a dramatic turnaround after Clive's worst-ever 15th place year but he was ultimately denied in the final knockings of the season. £17m Cristiano Ronaldo looked a risky signing but showed he still had some of his old magic and was ably supported by Teemu Pukki. With question marks over Ronaldo and Pukki already gone it might take another rebuild to keep Claymore on this page of the round-up.

What happened to last year's Star Player? Aaron Cresswell was a long way short of...

Star Player: Cristiano Ronaldo (17 goals)

4th: Trusted By Millions (down one)
A third straight year in the top four and nearly a fourth title. Beef took two MOTMs this season and each time they were followed by three straight defeats. Curse indeed! The top counter-scorer this year looks to have signed a good one in Luis Diaz but might need to persuade Gabriel Jesus, Richarlison and Emmanuel Dennis to stay if he's to make the top step again.

What happened to last year's Star Player? He was this year's Star Player too.

Star Player: Trent Alexander-Arnold (one goal, 15 cleans)

Monday 6 June 2022

2021/22 Co-Ord Round-up Part Seven - 5th-8th

5th: The Cow-Faced Juniors (same place as last year)
No improvement on position but the Cows had a shot at the title going into the last day. It was a patchy campaign, ultimately undone by only one win in the last four. Defensively this team is solid but goals are hard to come by and that's where the management team will surely look to strengthen this summer.

What happened to last year's Star Player? Edouard Mendy had another good year but not as good as...

Star Player: Gabriel (five goals, 12 cleans)

6th: Cheese Makers (up three)
The January signings of Eriksen and Coutinho helped Matthew to a highest ever finish and points total. A particularly good outcome after just one win in the first seven. It could have been better if Bryan Mbeumo hadn't hit the post seven times! Could Julian Alvarez help bring a trophy to Le Stade next season?

What happened to last year's Star Player? One of last year's winners won again, Tyrone Mings also had another good campaign.

Star Player: Andrew Robertson (three goals, 16 cleans)

7th: Stanley Athletic FC (up one)
A first trophy for Aaron came in the shape of the FA Cup but just one win in December an January knocked out any hopes of a first title. Was very unlucky with the 'counters against' total and injuries to Chilwell and Trippier didn't help. Needs to solve the Timo Werner/goals issue sooner rather than later.

What happened to last year's Star Player? Chilwell's injury stopped any chance of a repeat.

Star Player: Virgil van Dijk (two goals, 22 clean sheets)

8th: San Dimas High School (up five)
Back in their usual 5th-9th place and a top half finish for a bonus. The defence must be among the league's best but there is nowhere near enough goals in this team and the £50m signing of Jadon Sancho did little to change that. Losing this year's Star Player will be a blow if not adequately replaced.

What happened to last year's Star Player? Joao Cancelo had another very good season but lost out to...

Star Player: Antonio Rudiger (three goals, 14 cleans)

Sunday 5 June 2022

2021/22 Co-Ord Round-up Part Six - 9th-12th

9th: Aardvark Abacus (down five places on last season)
Inconsistent. Was fourteenth after week 10, bounced back to sixth after week 20 before finally falling out of the top half. The Star Player did his best and Diogo Jota added goals from midfield but record signing Alexandre Lacazette will likely need replacing after a poor season.

What happened to last year's Star Player? He held on to the award...

Star Player: Son Heung-min (18 goals)

10th: Real Muppets (down three)
Bounced around halfway up the table before finally finishing on the lower side after winning two out of the last eight. Goals from record-signing Patson Daka would have made a difference. A lot of young players were out on loan so Ryan will be hoping to give them a chance next season. Or sell them.

What happened to last year's Star Player? Ederson had another good season but not as good as...

Star Player: Reece James (five goals, 10 cleans)

11th: Mega Buck Bandits (down one)
It's just one top half finish in 14 years for Dave who concentrates on a solid first team rather than chopping and changing. More importantly than league position, the Bandits picked up their first trophy for more than 20 years when winning the Charity Shield. P-E. Aubameyang's exit leaves a vacancy up front.

What happened to last year's Star Player? Wilfried Zaha had another solid season.

Star Player: Alisson (16 cleans)

12th: Fred West LG XI (down eleven)
The title defence started with three wins out of the first four but then fell away dramatically winning only six more all season. Midfield goals dried up and there was little support for the Star Player up front. Never one to over-exert chasing a lost cause don't be surprised if they bounce back next year.

What happened to last year's Star Player? See below. It's five in a row for...

Star Player: Mohamed Salah (16 cleans)

2021/22 Co-Ord Round-up Part Five - 13th-16th

My annual assessment of the WSFFL teams starts with the bottom four.

13th: Nil Satis Nisi Optimum (down two places on last season)
In fifth place, and with a PCMT Final win for the first time, all was looking good for Paul at week 20. A spectacular collapse followed with only one more win. Players on the beach? Manager on the beach? Both? The start of next season will give a good indication as to which way this team's heading.

What happened to last year's Star Player? Stuart Dallas was well down on last season's numbers and sadly picked up a bad injury late in the season.

Star Player? Jose Sa (nine cleans)

14th: Markian United (up two)
Ok, Ian's team spent 29 weeks in the bottom three but five wins and a draw in the last 11 games definitely shows hope for next season. There have been some interesting signings heading into The Rock over recent months so some summer additions could make this a team to watch.

What happened to last year's Star Player? After a slow start to the season a certain striker won this for the seventh season in a row...

Star Player? Harry Kane (12 cleans)

15th: Wheel Madrid (down one)
Spent the Jack Grealish money on Bailey,  Varane and  Lukaku. Injuries and lack of form meant none of them really contributed. Callum Wilson also missed a big chunk of the season. Another manager who's very happy to pick the same team week on week - that might have to change if this team is to progress.

What happened to last year's Star Player? Jamie Vardy was another with injury problems but still scored 12 goals.

Star Player? Thiago Silva (three goals, 14 clean sheets)

16th: YTFIB (down four)
After two seasons outside the bottom four Julian propped up the league for the 13th time. Only 41 counters is the second-worst that I can find easily. Picked up Manager of the Month in January after nine straight defeats but that was the only highlight. A big clear-out of this squad is coming too.

What happened to last year's Star Player? Nick Pope had little chance to add to his three previous wins.

Star Player? Ilkay Gundogan (eight goals)

2021/22 Co-Ord Round-up Part Three - the Value for Money (pts per £m) table

Overall wages were up by £2.3% year on year but team changes ranged from a 36% increase to a 22% decrease. Who got their money's worth?

Matthew's good season echoed in wage expenditure as well as points. The Artisans are usually at the top end on this metric and Claymore are at the sharp end too. Wheels and Fred with rather poor returns on their wage spend.

2021/22 Co-Ord Round-up Part Two - The 'counters' tables

Here's the table if that was all that mattered in the game was positive 'counters'. Don't worry it won't be. (Well, not on my watch!)

1. Trusted By Millions - 109 (two places higher than real table, 19 more counters than last year)
2. The Cow-Faced Juniors - 106 (three places higher than real table, 7 more)
3. Claymore Athletic FC - 102 (same place, 17 more)
4. Stanley Athletic FC - 101 (three places higher than real table, 32 more)
5. The Wateringhole Society - 99 (four places lower, 14 less)
=6. The Fabulous Artisans - 93 (four places lower, nine more)
=6. Cheese Makers - 93 (same place, eight more)
8. San Dimas High School - 92 (same place, 22 more)
9. Real Muppets - 85 (one place higher, 16 fewer)
10. Aardvark Abacus - 82 (one place lower, 14 fewer)
11. Mega Buck Bandits - 76 (same place, one more)
12. Fred West LG XI - 75 (same place, 25 fewer)
13. Wheel Madrid - 72 (two places higher, nine fewer)
14. Markian United - 61 (one place higher, two fewer)
15. Nil Satis Nisi Optimum - 52 (two places lower, 14 fewer)
16. YTFIB - 41 (same place, 31 fewer)

The Wateringhole topped this last year but didn't win the league, fifth this year and won the league! Go figure. Trusted, Claymore, Stanley and San Dimas made big improvements while Fred and YTFIB dropped off massively on last year's performances.

Counters against is possibly a decent indicator of luck in the game. Here's this year's list...

1. Aardvark Abacus - 70
2. Claymore Athletic FC - 74
3. The Wateringhole Society - 77
=4. The Fabulous Artisans - 80
=4. Markian United - 80
=6. Mega Buck Bandits - 82
=6. YTFIB - 82
=8. San Dimas High School - 83
=8. Nil Satis Nisi Optimum - 83
10. Wheel Madrid - 86
11. Real Muppets - 87
=12. Trusted By Millions - 88
=12. The Cow-Faced Juniors - 88
=14. Cheese Makers - 89
=14. Fred West LG XI - 89
16. Stanley Athletic FC - 101

83 is the average so it looks like Ady didn't make the most of his luck. As for Aaron - I don't know what he did to deserve that!
