Report

Three of the league's top four scorers in Riyad Mahrez, Jamie Vardy and Romelu Lukaku lined up in this hotly anticipated game between two of the title chasers. One striker wasn't on show though, Brian missing Diego Costa through suspension.

With all that striking talent on show it was a surprise that a defender was the first name on the scoresheet. And at the wrong end too. Carl Jenkinson deflected a cross past his own keeper after 13 minutes to give San Dimas a flying start. Brian's team tried to get back on terms immediately with Jordan Ayew striking forcing a save two minutes later and Anthony Martial cutting in and hitting a post straight after. San Dimas survived that pressure and doubled their lead on 22 minutes. Lukaku found space and time to turn and steer home from eight yards. Athletico had a chance to cut the deficit ten minutes before the break but Per Mertersacker couldn't direct an instinctive header between the posts.

The first significant action after the break involved Lukaku again on 64 minutes. The Belgian raced on to a long ball, chested down and stroked a shot across the keeper to take the lead to 3-0. Athletico kept battling, Oxlade-Chamberlain hitting a post with seven minutes left and Ayew forced another save in injury time but the Saints' goal stayed intact and a Neil Taylor clean rounded out the win that means the Trophy will stay another year at Tesco Car Park Stadium.

Charity Shield Final result

The CFJs edge out the Artisans to win the Charity Shield for the first time.

The Cow-Faced Juniors 1
Borini 59

The Fabulous Artisans 0

(three cancelled cleans)

At the Etihad Stadium - Att: 54,523

Teams:

CFJs - Speroni; B.Davies, Sagna, Coloccini, van Dijk; Lennon, Willian, Sigurdsson, Ozil; Zarate, Sanchez.   Subs: Butland; Cameron; Gomez; Borini

Artisans - Fabianski; Gibbs, Fernandez, J.Olsson, Baines; Abdi, A.Johnson, Eriksen, Firmino; Origi, J.Campbell.  Subs: Begovic; B.Jones; Brunt; Memphis

Fabio Borini hasn't always looked like a WSFFL striker but his goal just before the hour settled the game and went some way to repaying Chris's £2.5m summer outlay on the Italian.

Borini opened his CFJs account last week and now seems to have developed a taste for goals. These two have doubled his tally for the previous two seasons combined! The Artisans defence were culpable as they were guilty of ball-watching a wayward shot that was heading well wide. Substitute Borini latched onto the opportunity and though his first attempt was denied by the keeper he fired in at the second attempt.

The run up to the game didn't help the Artisans preparation. I think their secretary will probably be hauled into the bosses office next week to explain why the team bus was heading to the Stade de Fromage for a league match a week early. Perhaps that explains Christian Benteke's absence if the big striker had made his own way and couldn't get from Cornwall to manchester in time. Ben's replacement strikeforce of Origi and Campbell made little impression and substitute Memphis was also hauled off by the break. When Christian Eriksen was subbed 18 minutes from time the last vestige of creativity was gone from the Artisans and the CFJs closed out the game in relative comfort.

Claymore take a three-point lead through the Christmas break and into the New Year. Branislav Ivanovic got his first of the season, Olivier Giroud his tenth but Clive’s team only saw off another two-goal salvo from Odion Ighalo for the Aardvarks with cleans from Miguel (or is it Manuel) Britos and Aaron Cresswell.

Athletico and San Dimas warmed up for the PCMT final next week by scoring five apiece. Brian’s team demolished YTFIB and dropped Julian’s side back to the bottom. Riyad Mahrez got two from the spot (how has he not won Player of the Month yet?) My team had more of a struggle and edged out Final Fantasy after leading 2-0 then trailing 4-2 with eight minutes left (what a finish from Yaya Toure that was.) Charlie Daniels pulled one back through an incorrectly rewarded penalty and then Kyle Walker and Neil Taylor cleans turned the game in my favour.

Fred is not out of it and shrugged off the Mega Bucks challenge through an unmarked Dele Alli just before the break and a Hugo Lloris clean although they did have Salomon Rondon sent off in injury time. FCK2 are also on the coat-tails of the leading pack. Harry Kane marauded through Matthew's defence to score the only goal for Kevin and Jon to down the maturing Cheese.

The Charity Shield finalists head into Friday’s game in differing form. The CFJs are unbeaten in six league games and beat the improving Trusted with rare goals from Fabricio Coloccini and Fabio Borini. The Artisans have won only one of their last five in the league and needed a clean from Federico Fernandez to grab a point against Kiran’s Wateringhole Society who led through Shinji Okazaki.

Nil Satis picked up their first win since week five when seeing off the Muppets. Second-half penalties from Oscar and Bojan doing the damage for Paul and Dan.

Claymore's lead is back up to three points after a return to high-scoring ways against Final Fantasy. Olivier Giroud is making up for the lack of Sergio Aguero and Wayne Rooney and set the ball rolling from the spot. The result helped drop Ceri to the foot of the table wit the Fantasy winless since August.

The Phoenix and San Dimas were both held to draws. Brian's team trailled to Jordan Henderson's opener for Beef but Riyad Mahrez turned the Trusted defence inside out to grab a point. SDHS blew a two-goal lead to share a point with the CFJs. No surprise that Jamie Vardy and Romelu Lukaku were on target but Geoff Cameron and Russell Martin cleans shared the spoils.

Two goals in five minutes, from Wilfried Bony and Craig Dawson, saw Fred beat the Artisans to leap back to fourth. FCK2 drop a place and needed two cleans to get a point at Nil Satis. Aaron Ramsey's breakaway and Eric Dier's glancing header within a minute had Paul and Dan in control but cleans from Kevin and Jon's team keep Nil Satis waiting for a win.

The Aardvarks are also on 22 points after beating Mega Bucks. Odion Ighalo started things off early for Ady but Josh King's first WSFFL goal levelled things in the second half. Petr Cech and Nacho Monreal cleans got Ady over the line. Another game where goals were pegged back by clean sheets was the nephew v uncle clash. Junior Stanislas curled in a corner inside two minutes for Cheese Makers and Marouane Fellaini bundled in to double the lead. Kiran got back on terms with cleans form Eric Pieters and Nathan Ake.

The battle at the bottom went to the Muppets. Ryan's win was his first after five straight defeats and came from a late deflection off of Kelechi Iheanacho and a Hector Bellerin clean.

Claymore continue to lead but the margin is now a single point. In an entertaining game against the CFJs Olivier Giroud scored at both ends, Gio Wijnaldum looked to have won it for Clive with an injury time breakaway before Fabricio Coloccini grabbed a draw for Chris and Co with a clean. Brian is back up to second after beating San Dimas. Jamie Vardy drew a blank for me and Romelu Lukaku's goal was only a consolation after Riyad Mahrez struck a hat-trick for Athletico.

FCK2 stay fourth but lost to the odd clean sheet to The Wateringhole Society. Fred also fell to another defeat, this time to Cheese Makers. Delle Alli opened the scoring for the Gardeners but Troy Deeney is running into form for Matthew and levelled from the spot. The Cheesers bagged all three points thanks to Robert Huth's clean and now heads the Warr clan mini-table. Which I don't suppose is important to them.

Ben's team went  down to the Abacus. It was looking good for the Artisans when Joel Campbell fired home the opener in the first half but it turned after the break. Martin Skrtel steered into his own goal to square things up and then Odion Ighalo got away form the Artisans defence in injury time to get the winner for Ady. Trusted are on the up after a shocking start. There's not a lot of goals in Beef's team but cleans from David De Gea and Ryan Shawcross were too much for Ryan's Muppets who are now bottom.

That's also partly due to YTFIB's win over Nil Satis. Marco Arnautovic scored twice in the first 15 minutes and Julian's team held on. And the Okus Derby? Honours even in an entertaining goalless draw.
