Match of the Week

Over 75,000 flooded into Kingham Park to see last season’s runners-up take on the 2012/13 champions who have shown signs of retuning to that sort of form and it was the CFJs who continued in that rich vein.

Only 11 minutes had passed when Alexis Sanchez latched on to a poor backless and coolly put his side ahead. Chris and Sons were two up two minutes later. Fernando Llorente had too much space in the area and lashed home his first WSFFL goal. For Athletico Riyad Mahrez was having an off day and got hooked at half time. Diego Costa was kept quiet too so Brian’s best efforts were coming from Nathan Redmond and Cedric Soares. After going close Soares got on the scoresheet with a clean but that was the last score and the CFJs leapfrog Athletico to go third.

Elsewhere in the league

We have new leaders in the shape of the Muppets. Ryan had a great battle with the desperately unlucky Mega Bucks, who had led 2-1. Raheem Sterling scored a great solo goal and a Laurent Koscielny clean turned the game in the Muppets’ favour. They take over at the top as Claymore blew a two goal lead at home to YTFIB. Sergio Aguero got his traditional brace for Clive but James Milner hit two from the spot for Julian and Joe Allen’s finish on 73 minutes meant the points were shared.

Jermain Defoe was another player who scored two and finished on the wrong end of the result for Fred. Son had already scored twice for Ady and Ben Gibson powered home a header to put the Aardvarks 3-2 up before Nacho Monreal clinched it with a clean. Cheese Makers are up to sixth after edging Nil Satis 2-1. Juan Mata gave Matthew the lead but Paul Pogba opened his account with a header from a corner five minutes later. We had to wait until the end for a decider, Tom Heaton’s clean giving the points to the Cheesers.

Trusted are eighth after a clean rescued a point for them at the Artisans. Ben’s team had waited until the 94th minute to take the lead before Ben Mee squared things for Beef. San Dimas needed a clean to get a point as well, at home to FCK2. A thumping James McArthur header had put Kevin’s team 2-1 up on 76 minutes. Charlie Daniels (a late replacement for the injured Dejan Lovren) got the clean to give me a point. Kiran picked up his first win of the season at Wheel Madrid. Paul had led 2-0 before Marcus Rashford pulled one back five minutes before the break. A great header for Michael Keane (it was a bit of a headers week) was the leveller and then it was a Keane clean that proved the winner.

Match of the week

Trusted and Wheels went into this match with similar records. Both had won two out of three in the league and had been dumped out of the PCMT the week before.

The first half hour and a bit had been quiet but then Jordan Henderson lit the game up with a stunning strike for Trusted. Beef’s team went two up not long after the break when Nicolas Otamendi went off with a clean sheet tucked safely in his back pocket. Trusted seemed to be heading to the victory but the game changed in two minutes. On 78 Ben Mee steered a cross into his own net and a minute later Robert Snodgrass converted a penalty to level things up. Both teams were happy to take the draw from there and are two points off the top.

Elsewhere in the league

Claymore stay top after edging out Cheese Makers. Two penalties from first Lanzini and then very late from Deeney did have Matthew ahead but Clive’s defence had a couple of cleans to give him the win. He’s two goals better off in the difference column than Fred who also had a 3-2 win. That was against FCK2 with new signing Islam Slimani scoring twice and a Hugo Lloris clean proving the difference after Kane and McArthur had brought Kevin level.

Athletico are on the same mark after scrapping to a win at YTFIB. After Tomkins had opened the scoring for Brian, Julian was level through a Maarten Stekelenburg own goal. That’s our third keeper og in as many weeks but this one surely shouldn’t have counted. Are people allowed to head goalies’ arms these days? (I am a lapsed member of the goalkeepers union though.) Januzaj saw red in the last minute for Athletico but a couple of cleans made the difference in their favour. After being beaten in the PCMT the Muppets turned last week’s opponents, the Artisans, over rather easily. De Bruyne’s clever free-kick under the wall was smart and Iheanacho and Sterling also finished off moves that carved through Ben’s defence like it wasn’t there.

Nil Satis are sixth after a comfortable 3-0 win over the inconsistent Aardvarks. Coleman and Townsend finishing excellent solo runs with goals to put Paul out of sight. The CFJs round out our bottom half after beating the Bandits 4-2. Two goals each for Sanchez and Chadli with Chris and Co having the luxury of a penalty miss from the Chilean striker too.The Wateringhole Society still prop the table up after defeat to San Dimas. An unmarked Dejan Lovren put me ahead and the in-form Romelu Lukaku got one just before the break. Marcus Rashford pulled one back for Kiran but it wasn’t enough.
