Match of the Week

I’m going to have to re-think this match of the week business. Maybe I should pick the most exciting game or the one with the biggest implications rather than just the one with the biggest crowd,

Because the 75,000+ didn’t have much to cheer this week (apart from the travelling Cheeseheads of course). A game short on chances saw the Muppets held goalless for the second straight week and the three points going to Matthew’s team thanks to a Nathaniel Clyne clean sheet. The Cheesers are fifth, five points from the summit. Ryan will be kicking himself as a win would have taken his side top.

Elsewhere in the league

A third league defeat for Fred has made things interesting at the sharp end. Did I say defeat? I meant heavy, crushing defeat. 6-0 to the CFJs. Alexis Sanchez and Gylfi Sigurdsson absolutely bossed the game from start to finish scoring three goals between them. Chris will be delighted to see Fernando Llorente back on the scoresheet with his two opportunistic injury time finishes. After putting six past Athletico last week Wheel Madrid followed it up by putting five past Claymore. Paul was two up on 34 minutes through Negredo and McAuley but Clive was level by the hour with two scruffy Sergio Aguero goals. Negredo got a second 11 minutes later to put his side back in front (they're his first goals since week one)y’d then cleans from Karius and Matip finished it off.

Athletico recovered from that defeat last week with a win at old rivals the Artisans*. Christian Eriksen’s early screamer was cancelled by Riyad Mahrez’s penalty before the break. James Tomkins kneed in for Brian with 15 minutes left but Christian Benteke levelled matters ten minutes later. The Phoenix winner came from a Cedric Soares clean. It was a clean that gave San Dimas all the points against Nil Satis. Paul had been in front on the stroke of half-time thanks to a great long-ranger from Pedro but Theo Walcott nodded me level eight minutes after the break. Dean Lovren was my clean sheet hero. Trusted are on 18 points too. Beef’s team never score two when one will do and it was a Victor Moses goal, after he’d been given the freedom of the Abacus penalty area, to settle his game against Ady’s team.

I’m sure there must have been season when Mega Bucks have only won five games all season. Dave’s already up to that number know after beating YTFIB 5-3. Charlie Austin opened the scoring inside a minute for the Bandits but it was two goals in three second-half minutes from Leroy Fer that took the game away from Julian’s side. The Wateringhole Society win! Erik Pieters’ clean was the only score against fellow strugglers FCK2 and lifts Kiran’s team above his opponents.

* I found an Artisans Lane while on my travels in Swindon this weekend. The town planners might have waited until they’d won the league before naming a street after them. Any other WSFFL road names out there. Must be a Cheese Street I’d have thought

Match of the Week

At last, a match of the week worthy of the name. One of the most crucial parts of it took place before the start when Adam Lallana failed a fitness test and Yaya Toure was drafted in to the Wheel Madrid starting XI.

That didn’t seem to bother Athletico early on as a Riyad Mahrez penalty opened the scoring on 15 minutes and James Morrison placed a second from range just a minute later. Toure celebrated his recall with a goal six minutes before the break to narrow the gap but Brian’s team were 3-1 up within two minutes, Diego Costa reacting quickest to a loose ball in the Wheels area. Victor Anichebe is back in the Phoenix fold and two second-half goals from the big striker looked to have secured all the points for his team. His second made it 5-2 after Toure’s close range steered finish a minute before. And then, something happened. Just as Brian was about to welcome all three points Paul’s team produced four cleans to turn the game on its head and win 6-5. That ‘clean sweep’ puts Paul in third above their opponents this week.

Elsewhere in the league

Fred has a two point lead after seeing off a determined Nil Satis. Jermain Defoe danced through the Nil Satis defence to continue his scoring run on 34 minutes but Paul’s team were probably the better side after that. Pedro had a couple of good chances go begging and Bojan wasted a chance from the spot before Seamus Coleman’s last minute header finally got him on level terms. For a couple of minutes before Fred had two cleans that gave him the win. His points lead is also courtesy of Real Muppets goalless draw against the Aardvarks. Anything else to say about that game? Er…no.

Cheese Makers needed a clean too to beat Mega Bucks 2-1 and go fifth. Dave had been ahead through another header from Michail Antonio but Juan Mata’s goal and Nathaniel Clyne’s clean kept the points at Le Stade. San Dimas are sixth after adding to Claymore’s woes. It took me just four minutes to get on the score sheet through Matt Phillips and I held that lead through to the 89th minute when substitute Olivier Giroud rose like a salmon to head an equaliser. My team shrugged that setback off and produced cleans from Allan Nyom, Paddy McNair and Charlie Daniels to complete the win. Clive has now lost five league games in a row. The last time that happened was shortly after the Earth cooled.

The Artisans have suddenly appeared in the top half after beating YTFIB 2-0. Etienne Capoue volleyed in after 33 seconds to put Ben ahead and nothing else happened until Patrick van Aanholt got a clean to double the advantage. Trusted missed a chance to keep the pressure on the top two when slipping to defeat at FCK2. Beef’s low scorers couldn’t make an impression and two goals from Harry Kane as the clock ran down gave Kevin’s team a rare win. The Wateringhole Society have shown signs of life in recent weeks but are still searching for a second win. This week Kiran held the CFJs to a 2-2 draw, Nathan Ake getting a goal and an equalising clean either side of Roberto Pereyra and Gylfi Sigurdsson goals for Chris and Co.
