Last season’s champions held this season’s leaders to a 2-2 draw to close the top of the table up again. Kiran made the perfect start in the fourth minute when January signing Dejan Kulusevski rolled the ball in from the edge of the area and the lead stayed intact until first half injury-time when Bruno Fernandes headed home. Mo Salah raced onto an assist from the Gardeners’ keeper to make it 2-1 to Fred on 67 minutes but a Malang Sarr clean seven minutes later earned the Society a point. Trusted are up to second after shutting out Cheese Makers at Le Stade. Robin Koch’s early clean had Beef in front and the lead was doubled just before the break when Joe Willock hooked in his first of the season. Raphinha slid in the third after the break and a perfect day for Trusted was complete when record signing Luis Diaz got on the scoresheet late on.

Claymore dropped a place after ending up on the wrong end of a seven-goal thriller v Stanley. Wout Weghorst’s 16-yard first time strike put Clive ahead but headers from Craig Dawson and Harry Maguire had turned the game in Aaron’s favour before the break. A deflected effort from Milot Rashica and a low Stuart Armstrong shot made it 4-1 within seven minutes of the re-start and though Claymore hit back through Daniel Podence and Hakim Ziyech it wasn’t enough to grab a point. The CFJs beat the Artisans 2-1 to close to within six points. Ben’s team went in front three minutes after half time when Emile Smith Rowe finished off a solo run with a well-placed shot. The Cows were level five minutes later when Rodrigo Moreno’s cross deceived the Artisans keeper and the away side took the points thanks to a Jan Bednarek clean.

The Aardvarks stay sixth after going down 1-0 in the 'Bevan Derby’. Ruben Neves settled this one in Dave’s favour after just nine minutes with a controlled half volley from the edge of the D. San Dimas are seventh, a point behind, after late goals brought me a 2-1 win at YTFIB. Ilkay Gundogan had latched on a keeper error to put Julian ahead are 33 minutes and my team only grabbed an equaliser with two minutes to go when Anthony Elanga found space to place through the keeper’s legs and two minutes into injury time Riyad Mahrez smashed a penalty high into the net for the winner.

The Muppets beat Nil Satis 2-0 with cleans from Andrea Christensen and Ben Johnson to take their opponents place in the top half. Markian beat Wheel Madrid 2-0 to climb off the bottom of the table. A second half Harry Kane brace made it eight without a win in the league for Paul W whose team are getting sucked into the scrap at the wrong end of the table.

Replay

Real Muppets 1 v Stanley Athletic FC 4

The Wateringhole Society are battling on two fronts now. The league leaders made the semi-finals with a big win over the CFJs. Raul Jimenez opened the scoring on six minutes for Kiran having been given time to chest down and volley in. Rodrigo hit the bar for the CFJs twelve minutes later but five minutes after that it was 2-0, Michael Keane getting up highest in the area to head home. Neil Maupay hooked in a half-volley to make it 3-0 a minute before the break before Rodrigo hit the bar again in first half injury time. The second half was less eventful with cleans from Ruben Dias and Tariq Lamptey making it 5-0 to the Society.

Claymore will also be thinking about a Double after getting past Markian 2-0. Clive making it through thanks to a Youri Tielemans spot-kick at the end of the first half and a Roman Saiss clean.

Cheese Makers have made the semi-finals for the first time since 2010/11, Matthew’s first season in charge, following a 2-0 win over Wheel Madrid. Fabinho reacted quickest to his own blocked shot to force the Cheese ahead five minutes before the break. A nervy second half was settled in Matthew’s favour with a Joel Ward clean. It’s Paul’s fourth quarter-final exit in his six seasons in the hot-seat.

Stanley Athletic and the Muppets will try again at the weekend after an entertaining 4-4 draw. Excellent first half strikes from Kieran Trippier and Raheem Sterling sent the game in level at the interval but it took just three minutes after the break for Ryan’s team to take control with a scruffy Phil Foden finish. Raheem Sterling added a header and completed his fifth WSFFL hat-trick, tapping in after his penalty was saved, to put the Muppets 4-1 up as the clock ran down. Almost immediately Craig Dawson replied for Aaron, in controversial circumstances too as the ball struck his arm on the way in. The goal stood and with the Muppets feeling hard done by cleans from Virgil van Dijk and Rico Henry levelled the game and set up the replay.

After Craig Dawson’s controversial goal in the first match set up the replay it was the same player who (fairly) headed Aaron ahead in that game. Three more goals in 20 minutes from Maguire, Rashica and Armstrong put Stanley into their second semi in three seasons.

The top three got wins to create a bit of separation at the top. The Wateringhole edged out bottom-placed Markian 2-0. An unlucky Mason Holgate own goal and a Ruben Dias clean getting the job done for Kiran. Claymore keep in touch after a 2-0 win over Fred. A mis-hit shot from Teemu Pukki after 38 seconds wasn’t added to until Aaron Cresswell’s clean completed the scoring. A daft sending off for Gabriel Martinelli didn’t help The Gardeners' cause. Trusted got back to winning ways with a 2-0 win at Wheel Madrid Both goals came in the last half hour, Diego Llorente slamming in from close range on 63 minutes and Che Adams' well-placed header seven minutes from time.

The teams in fourth and fifth both drew. The CFJs 2-2 with Cheese Makers, The Artisans 1-1 with Stanley. Gabriel got the close range opener for the Cows but Matthew led after a debut strike from Philippe Coutinho and a first of the season from Ryan Fraser. Aymeric Laporte got the equalising clean. Ben’s team were denied all the points by a Virgil van Dijk clean after Jarrod Bowen’s deflected shot had put him ahead on 68 minutes. If a team is going to come out of the pack to challenge the top three will it be the Aardvarks? They put Nil Satis away 5-1 this week after going behind to Paul Pogba’s first of the season. Diego Jota struck twice for Ady with Son Heung-Min getting one in-between. Cleans from Ben White and Kieran Tierney rounded out the scoring.

San Dimas hold on to the last place in the top half after a 1-1 draw with Mega Bucks. Riyad Mahrez scored from the spot for me five minutes before the break, Wilf Zaha equalised with a stunner on the hour for Dave but also missed a penalty. Dan James doubled his tally for the season with a brace for YTFIB but was on the wrong end of a 5-2 scoreline against the Muppets. Jason Ramsey scored two of his own with Armando Broja getting his first WSFFL goal, Kevin De Bruyne scoring after a keeper blunder and Emerson’s clean completing the scoring for Ryan.
