After losing to Cheese Makers in the PCMT last week the Artisans returned to their winning league form against the same opponents. An unmarked Roberto Firmino headed Ben in front on half an hour, an unlucky own goal off Yerry Mina doubled the lead ten minutes later. Matthew’s team couldn’t find a way back and Martin Montoya’s clean was the last word in a 3-0 win. The Wateringhole Society lost their unbeaten league run, going down 5-2 to San Dimas. My team led twice in the first half. David Silva slid in on 52 seconds but Nathan Ake headed level on ten minutes. Parity lasted only two minutes before a deflected Riyad Mahrez free-kick put me ahead again but Harry Wilson made sure the teams were level at the break. With no more goals it was cleans from Lundstram, Cancelo and Schar that put me in second place.

The Muppets are third after a 2-1 win at Mega Bucks. P-E Aubameyang’s free-kick put Dave ahead with six minutes left but Ryan hit back straight away, Kevin de Bruyne blasting into the top corner. James Tarkowski’s clean for the Muppets was the decider. Athletico join the Muppets and TWS on ten points after a 3-1 win at Nil Satis. Chris Wood’s double inside the first 14 minutes gave Brian a strong foothold and even though Andriy Yarmolenko pulled one back for Paul S the advantage was restored by James Ward-Prowse’s second half penalty.

Trusted are a point behind that group and still unbeaten after crushing Markian 6-1 this week. Bernardo Silva and Nicolas Otamendi had Beef two up in 20 minutes but a stumbling Harry Kane pulled one back for the joint managers before the half hour. The home optimism didn’t last long. Silva completed his hat-trick within 15 minutes of the restart, Otamendi and Mee added cleans. Claymore were also 6-1 winners this week with champions Fred on the receiving end. This one had been tight until the late stages. An early Sergio Aguero penalty had been cancelled out by a Nicolas Pepe spot-kick. Aaron Cresswell produced a great free-kick to put Claymore ahead with six minutes left and he, Dubravka, Willems and Stones added cleans.

Wheel Madrid have also put six past Fred this season and they improved to ninth place after seeing off the CFJs 3-0. John McGinn timed his run perfectly to steer in on 20 minutes but it was five minutes from time when the points were sealed, James Maddison firing in from outside the box. There was still time for a calamitous defensive mistake by the CFJs to hand Callum Wilson a third. The Aardvarks knocked YTFIB out of the PCMT last week and denied Julian revenge in the dying seconds of this one. Ricardo Pereira had fired The Yorkies in front on 69 minutes but Ady levelled with practically the last kick of the game when Diogo Jota made no mistake when he found himself unmarked a couple of yards out at the back post.

PCMT 1st Round Results - Holders crash out

The holders go out at the first hurdle plus there are first defeats of the season for the Artisans, Trusted and TWS.

It’s usually traditional to start with the holders so let’s do that. Especially as it’ll be the only time I’ll mention them this season. San Dimas suffered their first opening round defeat since 2011/12 at the hands of Claymore. Sergio Aguero and Teemu Pukki are building a great partnership and they got a goal each, either side of half-time, in the 2-1 win.

The three teams that are unbeaten in the league all lost. Leaders the Artisans were 2-1 up at Cheese Makers after Mason Mount’s goal six minutes into injury time but Matthew turned it round with cleans from Tyrone Mings and Issa Diop to win 3-2. The Wateringhole Society fell 2-1 to last year’s runners-up Wheel Madrid. Marcus Rashford put Kiran in front with an eighth minute penalty but Callum Wilson’s double was enough to give Paul W the win. That’s eight straight first round exits for the TWS franchise. Trusted were our last unbeaten side but went down 2-1 to Fred. Beef was ahead at the break too after Erik Lamela slid home on 42 minutes. The Gardeners turned it round after the break in a seven minute spell through Moussa Djenepo and then Mo Salah.

The Aardvarks got their first win of the campaign at fellow strugglers YTFIB. Son Heung-Min did the damage for Ady with two goals in the first 23 minutes, the second a superb volley. There’s no such joy for Markian who are still without a win. They went down 4-1 to the Muppets, Sadio Mane put Ryan two up before half-time, Rodri’s first WSFFL goal with two minutes left threw Markian a lifeline but Ryan’s team closed it out with cleans from Alderweireld and Ogbonna.

Athletico Phoenix will have the chance to put their name on the Charity Shield for a third time after being beaten 2-1 at Mega Bucks. P-E Aubameyang got both Bandits goals in the first half for Dave, Brian could only reply through a Harry Maguire clean. Top scorer this week was the CFJ’s Tammy Abraham who scored three or four depending on how you look at it. Abraham put three in the right net but also scored an unlucky own goal in a 4-2 win over Nil Satis.

Three teams remain unbeaten as we head into the first international break. The Artisans keep top spot on goal difference after a 3-3 draw with another one of those teams, Trusted. Three goals in the first ten minutes lit this one up. Richarlison opened the scoring for Beef but Christian Eriksen levelled after a weak save from the Trusted keeper and another Dan James special had the leaders 2-1 up. Bernardo Silva’s equaliser for Beef came with 11 minutes to go before the teams swapped goals a minute later. Bernardo Silva for Beef and Roberto Firmino for Ben and it finished 3-3. It’s now three draws for Trusted in that unbeaten run.

The Wateringhole Society have joined the Artisans on ten points after beating Mega Bucks 2-1. All the goals came in the second half with Jannik Westergaard heading Kiran in front just before the hour. P-E Aubameyang (who else?) got Dave level but only for four minutes when Raul Jimenez headed Kiran’s winner and got a kick in the face for his troubles. San Dimas made it three wins out of four with a 2-1 win at the Aardvarks. Fabian Schar put me in front four minutes before the break, did VAR miss a handball in the buildup?, but Alexandre Lacazette smashed Ady level in first-half injury time. The winner came courtesy of Vicente Guaita’s clean sheet.

The CFJs have also won three out of four, Nil Satis were the victims this week. Paul went ahead thanks to Alex Iwobi’s first goal for his new club but Nil Satis were behind at the break. Tammy Abraham turned it round with his second successive brace for the Cows and an injured Aymeric Laporte had notched up a clean. Andre Yarmolenko brought it back to 3-2, moments after hitting the post, but the CFJs held on. Going into this week’s games the Muppets and Claymore were the league’s top scorers. They still are after an eight goal thriller. The Muppets raced into a three goal lead in 37 minutes through Kevin De Bruyne, record-signing Sebastian Haller and Sadio Mane. It was 3-2 by the break as Clive hit back through a Youri Tielemans tap-in and another from Sergio Aguero. Ten minutes after the break it was 3-3, Aguero again, and the game was eventually settled in Ryan’s favour with clean sheets from Joel Ward and Angelo Ogbonna.

Athletico are sixth after surviving a scare at home to bottom-placed Markian. Brian’s team were two down by half-time. An unlucky own goal off Chris Wood and then a Harry Kane penalty must have had the joint managers thinking they were going to snap their long run without a win*. Brian turned it round with Jordan Ayew’s goal and cleans from Virgil van Dijk and Arthur Masuaku. Life looks better for Cheese Makers after a second straight win. Ok it was a scruffy 1-0 over YTFIB thanks to Andrew Robertson’s clean but there are no pictures on the league table.

The jaw-dropping result of the week was at the home of the champions as Fred went down 6-0 to Wheel Madrid. Two goals in the first 15 minutes put Wheels in control. Jamie Vardy’s superb lob after outpacing the Fred defence came first, Callum Wilson opened his account straight after. Vardy got a second in the second half and Kurt Zouma’s late own goal summed up Fred’s day.

* Markian’s last win came in February - that’s 13 straight league defeats now.
